Preparation of Benzoic Acid

Benzoic acid can be prepared in various ways, a few of them are:

Industrial Preparation: Benzoic acid can be produced in industries by partial oxidation of toluene. In this process, Cobalt or manganese naphthenates act as a catalyst.

C6H5CH3 + O2 → C6H5COOH – H2O

Hydrolysis: Benzoic acid can be formed by the process of hydrolysis of Benzamide or Benzonitrile with a strong base like sodium hydroxide.

Oxidation: Benzoic acid can be formed from Benzyl alcohol or Benzyldehyde by the process of oxidation in the presence of an oxidizing agent like potassium permanganate.

Benzoic Acid is a white, solid organic compound that belongs to the family of carboxylic acid. The chemical formula of Benzoic Acid is C6H5COOH. It is used in the manufacturing of certain products including perfumes, toothpaste, face wash, chemicals, dyes, insect repellent, and the list is endless.
