Chemical Properties of Benzoic Acid
Chemical Properties of the Benzoic Acisd are added below as,
- Stability: Benzoic acid is highly stable under normal circumstances and it does not decompose easily.
- Acidity: It is a weak acid and thus it can donate a hydrogen ion (H+) to form benzoate ions.
- pH: Being a weak acidic it has a pH value of around 2.8
- Antimicrobial Properties: Benzoic acid has antimicrobial properties therefore its salts are commonly used as preservatives in food and cosmetics.
- Sublimation: Benzoic acid can undergo sublimation i.e. it can change from a solid directly into a vapor without changing into a liquid.
- Reactivity: It can undergo various chemical reactions, such as nitration, oxidation, decarboxylation, etc.
