Indian Desert
A desert is a dry area where more water evaporates than falls as rain. Rajasthan is home to over 60% of the Thar Desert, often called the Great Indian Desert. Here are some key facts about this desert:
- The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, lies northwest of the Aravalli Hills. It’s marked by rolling landscapes with long, crescent-shaped dunes called longitudinal barchans, as well as scattered individual dunes.
- Rainfall in the region is very low, usually less than 150 mm per year. This creates a dry climate with sparse vegetation, earning it the nickname Marusthali.
- Evidence suggests that during the Mesozoic era, this area was underwater. Fossils found in places like Akal’s wood fossils park and sea deposits near Brahmsar, close to Jaisalmer, support this theory. These wood fossils are about 180 million years old on average.
- While weathering and wind shape the desert’s surface features, its underlying rock structure is connected to the Peninsular Plateau.
- The Thar Desert boasts unique geographical features like mushroom rocks, oases, and shifting sand dunes.
- Geographically, the desert can be split into two halves: the southern part faces the Rann of Kachchh, while the northern part slopes toward Sindh.
- The Luni River is the primary river flowing through the southern portion of the desert, eventually reaching the Arabian Sea through the Rann of Kutch. In the desert, there are temporary water bodies that dry up and join lakes or playas, showcasing inland drainage. Salt in the area mainly comes from the brackish water in these lakes and playas.
