Punjab University, Chandigarh Campus Experience for M.C.A (2 year)

I am currently pursuing my MCA from Panjab University. To get enrolled in this program, you need to clear the PUCET entrance exam, which is the gateway to the MCA program. Panjab University has three campuses: the main campus in Chandigarh, and two others in Hoshiarpur and Muktsar, Punjab.

Enrollment and Fees

Enrolling in the MCA program is a great decision if you secure a good rank. The main campus in Chandigarh offers two batches: a morning batch and an evening batch. There’s a significant fee difference between the two. The morning batch costs around 70,000 INR for two years, while the evening batch and the batches in other campuses cost around 2,00,000 INR for the same duration. Despite the fee difference, the quality of classes and teachers is almost the same across both batches.

Teachers and Environment

The teaching quality varies widely. Some teachers are excellent, while others lack basic knowledge and have a very casual teaching style. Sometimes, it feels like a waste of time attending classes. However, attendance is strictly monitored, causing stress among students about potential shortages.

For instance, a teacher who was supposed to teach Angular, Django, and AJAX (part of our syllabus) did not know the subjects well and asked a PhD scholar to take over, who also struggled with teaching. Some professors and PhD scholars display a lot of attitude for no apparent reason, which can be frustrating. Basic programming languages like C++ are sometimes not well-taught, so don’t expect too much from the faculty if you decide to join.

Syllabus and Coursework

The syllabus is extensive. The MCA course used to be three years, but it has been compressed into a two-year format, with three semesters of coursework and a final six-month internship. This condensation makes it challenging to balance placement preparation, university syllabus, and attendance requirements. Additionally, there are mid-semester exams twice in each semester, so students end up giving exams three times per semester to move to the next one.

Placements

The placement eligibility criteria are quite strict: you need to have over 70% marks in 10th, 12th, and your graduation year. The placement rate is around 60%, with an average package of 3 lakhs INR. However, the Training and Placement Cell (TPC) is not very effective and often seems unserious about the placements.

Canteen – STUC (Student Center)

One of the highlights of Panjab University is the canteen, popularly known as STUC (Student Center). The food here is good, and the rates are genuine, making it a popular spot among students for meals and hangouts.

While the MCA program at Panjab University has its challenges, such as inconsistent teaching quality and a hectic syllabus, it can still be a good option for those who secure a good rank and can navigate the system effectively. The placement opportunities, while not stellar, are decent enough for a significant number of students. However, be prepared to face some administrative and academic hurdles along the way.
