My Journey into Game Development From Setbacks to Success

Hello,

I’m an average student from West Bengal and a Tier 3 college pursuing a B.tech in Computer Science. Currently, I am on the way to game development, learning 3D, and data science, and also working as an intern for a company.

But my life was not this sorted, I will not say that it is sorted now, going on a roller coaster ride.

It was 2020, and I was preparing for WBJEE and JEE Mains, There was no one to guide me in this, and at that time, the pandemic hit. I registered for 4 attempts in JEE; on the first attempt I got a 27 percentile; on the second attempt I got a 59 percentile; then my family got affected by COVID, and all are COVID-19 positive, and 1 month was wasted, lost all consistency for a month, forgot every concept due to the tensed situation, but still gave WBJEE but missed other 2 attempts in JEE Mains, got 27K rank in WBJEE after the tragic incident.

I decided to take admission to a college and, at the same time, prepare for next year so that my one year will not be wasted if I don’t get a good rank. I went to a college that was 30 km away from my home, It took 3 hours to go and 4 hours to return, so all day got wasted on this college journey. It used to take 1-2 days to get over the hangover of the journey, and I was preparing myself and taking a physics wallah course for jeemains. I was not cooperating with the college, and at the same time, the college forced me to come to college to get 75% attendance. The decision I made to get into the college was my biggest mistake, Exam day came, the result came out, and I got a 7k rank, I wish I had focused on WBJEE more; I could easily get a good rank, at least under 2k.

I was getting good colleges with the 7k rank, but I decided not to change colleges, which is the 2nd biggest mistake of my life, I used to get scholarships of a good amount and if I changed colleges, I would not be getting those, and there are some other reasons too, I regret my decision, I should have changed my college at that time.

2nd year of college:

I decided to grow my audience on YouTube and make a YouTube gaming channel. I used to play a game and decided to make content on that. I uploaded some videos and got 50 subscribers. Then I came to know about a game and started making content on that, and the response was awesome. I got 200 subs after uploading 4-5 videos, but after that, views went down and subs were not increasing, I thought it was a problem with YouTube and deleted the channel and started a new one, and I was right. I got 740 subs within 6 months, but after that, all views and subs were reduced. It was very depressing that suddenly your video, which was getting 17k views in one day, after an hour, the views dropped by 1-2 views per hour. I was so depressed, but I started a new channel on a new game, and that is growing too, but don’t know what happened with it. Now it has 600 subs and 255k views. and the views can go down anytime, but now I am not worried about the views and subs; I am just posting videos, God knows and YouTube knows what they want with the channel. It was depressing, the whole second year was depressing.

3rd year of college:

I can’t waste time behind a thing that cracks for some lucky guys only, decided to get into the game development field, started learning 3D, and game development, learned a lot, worked a lot, watched tutorials a lot, started loving 3D, started a freelancing journey on 3D services, got some work, I was happy, got a paid internship offer about 3D modelling, I was happier, and finally, I started learning data science as it can help me in game development to analyze spending on the game. I got some data science paid internship offers; I already joined the 3D modelling internship, so I have to refuse the offers. I was a little happy to get the offers after getting rejections, failure, and depression. And I am also running the channel, just posting without worrying about the growth.

P.S.: I know about web development. I took computer science in my 11th and 12th grades and stopped while preparing for Mains. I also have some experience in hacking.

Plans: I want to start my startup and create good games from India so that I can prove that India can make world-class, AAA-quality games. There are many gaming startups there with a similar aim, and I also want to be one of them. Let’s see where fate takes me.
