Grapes Family

Grapes belong to the family “Vitaceae,” which is a botanical family of flowering plants. The grapes are primarily represented by the genus “Vitis.” With many different species and cultivators, the genus “Vitis” includes the well-known species “Vitis vinifera,” which is commonly grown for table grapes and wine. In the Plant kingdom, they are herbaceous plants with unique leaves. It is primarily involved in wine, food, and raisin production. Some of the common species are given below:

  • Vinifera: These grapes are in group of varieties with high sugar consistency which are mostly found in Asia and Europe. Some of Vinifera grape varieties are:- Syrah, Sangiovese, Chasselas, Muscat Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Flame Seedless, and Riesling.
  • Labrusca: It’s a good healthy grape with low pH levels, and less sugar consistency and can be found in any grocery store. It is also known as fox grape which is used to make sweet wines.
  • Aestivalis: Aestivalis also known as the Norton grape, has hard skin with many seeds. It occurs with high sugar levels and low acidity, which is used to make dry wines.

Scientific Name of Grapes

The scientific name of Grapes is “Vitis vinifera“. With around 10,000 species, Grapes belong to the Vitaceae family. China is the largest producer of grapes along with Italy and France. India is the 10th largest producer of grapes in the world. The climate and soil conditions in these regions are perfect for the grapes to grow. A well-drained soil and warm weather are the two most important conditions for grapes to grow. In Hindi we call them “Angoor”. It’s an essential part of our diet which contains nutrients, and antioxidants, and it is the most hydrating fruit for our body.
