Central African Republic – Sixth Most Dangerous Country in Africa
The Central African Republic (CAR) gained independence in 1960, but its history has been marked by challenges. Dictatorial rule and a brief attempt at monarchy preceded the country’s shift toward democracy in the 1990s. The first democratically elected president, Ange-Felix Patasse, faced a coup led by General Francois Bozize in 2003.
The CAR faced the Bush War in 2004, with intermittent peace treaties, yet a persistent civil war resurged in 2012 and continues into 2024 without a conclusive ceasefire. Despite abundant natural resources, including oil, diamonds, gold, and uranium, along with fertile land, the CAR remains among the world’s poorest nations, with the lowest GDP per capita by purchasing power parity.
In a disheartening dual distinction, the CAR holds the title of the least healthy nation globally and the most challenging place for young people to live. These historical and current challenges contribute to the country’s recognition as one of the most dangerous places in Africa.
