SSC CHSL Exam Preparation and Experience

Preparation Days

Preparing for the SSC CHSL exam was a journey filled with dedication, discipline, and a fair share of challenges. Here’s how I approached my preparation:

Study Plan

  • Understanding the Syllabus: The first step was to get a clear understanding of the SSC CHSL syllabus. This included sections on General Intelligence, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness.
  • Daily Schedule: I created a daily study schedule that allocated time slots for each subject. Mornings were reserved for Quantitative Aptitude when my mind was fresh, afternoons for General Intelligence, evenings for English Language, and nights for General Awareness.

Study Materials

  • Books and Guides: I referred to popular books like RS Aggarwal’s “Quantitative Aptitude,” Lucent’s “General Knowledge,” and Norman Lewis’s “Word Power Made Easy” for vocabulary.
  • Online Resources: Websites like Testbook, Gradeup, and Unacademy provided valuable mock tests and quizzes that helped in practice and assess my preparation level.
  • Coaching Classes: I enrolled in a local coaching class for structured learning and doubt-solving sessions. The interaction with peers and guidance from experienced teachers was beneficial.

Practice and Revision

  • Mock Tests: Regular mock tests were crucial. They helped me get accustomed to the exam pattern, manage time effectively, and identify weak areas.
  • Previous Year Papers: Solving previous years’ question papers gave me an insight into the types of questions asked and the difficulty level.
  • Daily Revision: Revising regularly was essential to retain concepts. I dedicated the last 30 minutes of each day to revise what I had studied.

Maintaining Balance

  • Breaks and Leisure: To avoid burnout, I ensured to take short breaks during study sessions. I also engaged in leisure activities like reading, watching educational videos, and occasional outings.
  • Health and Diet: I maintained a healthy diet and incorporated light exercises into my routine to stay physically and mentally fit.

Exam Experience

Pre-Exam Day

  • Preparation: The day before the exam, I ensured all my documents were ready – admit card, ID proof, and photographs. I also packed my exam kit, including a transparent water bottle and a pen.
  • Relaxation: I avoided any new topics and focused on light revision. A good night’s sleep was crucial to stay alert and focused during the exam.

Exam Day

  • Reaching the Center: I arrived at the TCS ion digital zone in Kolkata an hour early. The extra time helped me stay calm and composed, avoiding any last-minute rush.
  • Security Check: The security check was thorough but well-organized. After verifying my documents, I proceeded to the biometric registration where my fingerprints and photograph were taken.

Inside the Examination Hall

  • Seating and Instructions: The seating arrangement was well-structured. The invigilators provided clear instructions, and a brief tutorial on the computer-based exam interface helped in understanding the navigation and functionalities.
  • Exam Environment: The exam hall was quiet, air-conditioned, and free from distractions. The invigilators were vigilant yet supportive.

During the Exam

  • Section-Wise Approach: I started with the section I was most confident in, which was English Language, to build momentum. Quantitative Aptitude followed, then General Intelligence, and finally General Awareness.
  • Time Management: Managing time was key. I kept an eye on the clock and ensured I didn’t spend too much time on any single question. The practice from mock tests paid off here.
  • Technical Smoothness: Fortunately, there were no technical glitches. However, the invigilators were prompt in addressing any concerns raised by candidates.

Post-Exam

  • Submission and Exit: After completing the exam, I carefully reviewed my answers and submitted them. The invigilators checked the systems to ensure proper submission, and we were allowed to leave in an orderly manner.
  • Reflection: On my way home, I reflected on my performance. While I felt confident, I knew it was important to wait for the results without overthinking.
