Internet service providers (ISPs) can install different types of fiber last mile connections. Each offers different levels of purity for fiber internet connections. Each is called “Fiber to X” or “FTTX”, where x represents the location of the end of the fiber optic link.
- The most direct fiber optic line is FTTP/FTTH/FTTB/FTTD. Fiber to the Premises, Home, Business, or Desktop. Bring pure fiber straight to your home without the use of copper cables. For ISPs, these are also the most expensive fiber connections.
- Fiber to Building (FTTB): Fiber optic cables are distributed throughout the building by means of copper cables. This is a popular choice for homes, hotels, and educational institutions. The most common fiber optic connections are FTTC/FTTN/FTTS. Fiber to Cabinet/Curb, Neighborhood, or Street. Fiber is delivered to street cabinets about 1000 feet (0.3 km) from the furthest point and distributed over copper wire.
- This is the most cost-effective fiber internet connection for ISPs. It eliminates the need to invest in costly infrastructure for individual facilities and can be redistributed when new homes and businesses move in.
