Parts of Flower
Many plant species and ecosystems depend on floral components for their existence because they enable the effective reproduction and proliferation of blooming plants. Parts of flower are classified into two parts internal and external.
External Parts of a Flower
The external parts of flower are given below:
Parts of Flower |
Description |
---|---|
Petals |
Attract pollinators and guide them to the reproductive parts of the flower. |
Resemble leaves and encircle the base of the flower bud. Protect the flower buds in the early stages of development. |
|
Receptacle |
All floral components are connected here. Ensure the floral components are positioned and spaced correctly for effective pollination. |

Internal Parts of a Flower
The internal parts of flower are given below:
Parts of Flower |
Description |
---|---|
Stamens |
Male reproductive parts of flowers consisting of anther and filaments |
Pistils |
Female reproductive parts of flowers consisting of stigma, style, and ovary. Involved in pollen reception, pollen tube formation, and ovule development |
Whorls |
Layers of flower components, including the calyx (sepal whorl), corolla (petal whorl), androecium (stamen whorl), and gynoecium (pistil whorl), each with specific functions. |
Ovary |
Situated in the pistil contains ovules that develop into seeds after fertilization, contributing to the reproduction process. |
Diagram of Flower
A Diagram of flower shows the internal and exterior components of the flower. The diagram of flower reproductive system helps get a clear idea of the reproductive parts of flowers along with their function. Every floral component attaches to the receptacle. Sepals function to protect the flower bud while it develops. The male reproductive organ known as the stamen has an anther that secretes pollen that is held aloft by a filament and contains male gametes. The female reproductive organ known as the pistil is made up of an ovary, containing the ovules and a stigma that collects pollen.
