Q2. Answer the following questions in about 30 words.

(i) What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of living organisms found in different ecosystems, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, along with the genetic diversity within species and the ecosystems they inhabit.

(ii) What are the different levels of biodiversity?

Biodiversity consists three levels:

  1. Species diversity (variety of species)
  2. Genetic diversity (variation within species)
  3. Ecosystem diversity (variety of ecosystems and habitats).

(iii) What do you understand by ‘hotspots’?

‘Hotspots’ are areas with exceptionally high levels of biodiversity that are also threatened by human activities.

(iv) Discuss briefly the importance of animals to human kind.

Animals provide humans with food, companionship, ecological balance, and contribute to scientific research and cultural significance.

(v) What do you understand by ‘exotic species’?

Exotic species are those that are not native to a particular ecosystem or habitat but are introduced by human activities, intentionally or accidentally. These species can have significant impacts on native ecosystems, often outcompeting native species or disrupting the balance of the ecosystem.

Q3. Answer the following questions in about 150 words.

(i) What are the roles played by biodiversity in the shaping of nature?

Biodiversity plays important role in shaping nature by contributing to ecosystem stability, resilience, and productivity. It provides various ecosystem services like pollination, nutrient cycling, and climate regulation.

Biodiversity also supports food security, medicine discovery, and cultural diversity. It enhances ecosystem adaptability to environmental changes, ensuring the survival of species and ecosystems over time. Overall, biodiversity is fundamental to the functioning of ecosystems and the sustainability of life on Earth.

(ii) What are the major factors that are responsible for the loss of biodiversity? What steps are needed to prevent them?

The loss of biodiversity is primarily caused by habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation of natural resources, invasive species, and climate change.

To prevent further loss, concerted efforts are needed. This includes preserving and restoring habitats, implementing sustainable resource management practices, enforcing laws and regulations to protect wildlife, controlling invasive species, and mitigating climate change through reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting renewable energy sources. Education and awareness programs are also crucial to promoting biodiversity conservation and fostering a sense of responsibility towards nature.
