The French Crown
If you consider Canada’s history to begin with French colonization, then the first monarch would be King Francis I of France.
- He established the colony of New France in 1534. His reign period was from 1534 to 1547.
The British Crown
If you focus on the British colonial period and later the Dominion of Canada, then the first monarch would be King Henry VII of England.
- John Cabot, sailing under Henry VII’s commission landed in North America in 1497 and claimed the land for England.
List of Canadian Monarchs
The current Monarch of Canada is King Charles III (Charles Philip Arthur George). He became the King in September 2022. Canada is a Constitutional Monarch which means the monarch is the symbolic head of the state but the real power belongs to the elected government. Monarch powers are limited so, they can’t make laws and govern independently. The true governing powers rest with the elected Prime Minister and the Parliament of Canada.
