Brief Description of Sangam Literature-
The Sangam literature was mainly written in the Tamil language.
In Sangam literature, the poems of the Agam class are mainly related to the subject of love.
The history of these epics is called the âGolden Age of Sangam literatureâ.
There are three main collections of texts in Sangam literature â
1. Ettuttokai
2. Pattuppattu
3. Padineen Keelkankku

a. Nanninai | It mentions five tinis (lands). These five branches are Mullai, Marutham, Palai, Nithal and Kuranji. There is a special mention of love songs in this poem. |

c. Enkurunur | In this also poems on love have been written. |
d. Paditrapattu | It describes the solar power of 8 Chera kings |
e. Paripadal | This is the first collection of music in Tamil literature. In this, songs have been sung in praise of various deities. |
f. Kalithokai | This text describes the customs of the marriage of the Sangam age. |
g. Ahnanru | Its author was Rudrasharman. Its theme is also love-based. |
h. Purananuru | It is also known as Pooram |
2. Pattuppattu | Pattuppattu is a collection of ten short poems. The time of writing these verses dates back to the 2nd century AD. This is the second collection of the third Sangam. In this, the description of Chera kings has been given. In these, details about the Pandya king Nedungelian and the Chola king Karikala are also found. |
a. Tirumurukatruppadai | It was composed by Nakkirar. It has a song related to the Tamil deity Murugan. |
b. Nedunalvadai | It was composed by Nakkirar. |
c. Pattinappalai | It was composed by Rudrakannar. It contains love songs. Its story is similar to that of the Buddha character of Ashvaghosha. |
d. Perumpantruppdai | It was composed by Rudrakannar. |
e. Porunaratrupadai | It was composed by Mutattamakkanniyar. |
f. Maduraikanchi | It was composed by Mangudi Maruthanar. |
g. Sirupanattropade | It was composed by Nathar. |
h. Mullaipattu | It was composed by Naputtar. |
i. Kurunjipattu | It was composed by Kapilar. |
j. Malaipadakadam | It was composed by Kaushikanar |
3. Padineen Keelkankku |
Padineen Keelkankku is a compilation of eighteen short poems. The most outstanding of these poems is âTirukuralâ or âKuralâ composed by Thiruvalluvar. The Kural is said to be the cornerstone of Tamil literature. Subjects like political science, economics, ethics and love are included in this work. This is the third collection of the third Sangam. There are 18 virtuous songs in it, which are as follows â |

b. Nanmanikakkadikai | It was composed by Nagnar. |
c. Karnar Pathu | It mentions the Vedic sacrifices. |
d. Kollivallinarapathu | It describes the wars. |
e. Kural | Its poet is Thiruvalluvar. Kural is considered to be the basis of Tamil literature. It is counted in the literature trivarga. Because it mentions Dharma, Artha and Kama. It is also called the Bible of Tamil literature or Panchamveda. |
