How Many Eggs Does a Woman have in Her Lifetime?
The ovary plays a major role in reproduction. A woman is born with a limited number of eggs stored in her ovaries, around 1 to 2 million. This number significantly decreases throughout her reproductive years. By menopause (around age 51), very few eggs remain (less than 1,000). When a woman is in her menstruating years, only one egg is released from the ovary every month.
Life Stage | Approximate Number of Eggs |
Birth | 1 to 2 million |
Menarche (puberty) | 300,000 – 400,000 |
Reproductive years | Gradually decreases |
Menopause | Less than 1000 |
The factors affecting egg count are:
- Age: The number of eggs naturally decreases as a woman ages.
- Genetics: Genetic predisposition can influence the initial number of eggs and the rate of decline.
- Hormonal fluctuations: Hormonal imbalances can affect egg development and ovulation.
