Atlassian Interview Experience for SWE Intern + FTE

I appeared in the Atlassian “Women In Tech” Event in 2021 – its First Edition, during my pre-final year. I secured the internship through this drive and also grabbed PPO after the completion of my internship. Currently, I am working as a Software Engineer at Atlassian.

Application Process

I discovered the incredible opportunity through Arsh Goyal’s YouTube video, which included a Google form link in the description. I promptly filled out the application form and received an email from the GirlScript Foundation outlining the subsequent steps. A few days later, I received another email from GirlScript Foundation, confirming that I met Atlassian’s eligibility criteria. The mail also contained Online Assessment details.

A day before the assessment, I received another email containing the test link, login details, and platform information.

Online Assessment

The online assessment was conducted on HackerRank on 16th September 2021, within a specified time limit of 90 minutes. The login window was opened from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. This assessment featured four distinct questions:

• 1. The first one was an easy-level Mathematics problem. I initially solved it in O(N) time and O(1) space complexity. However, after getting a few failed test cases in the first attempt, I optimized it to O(1) time complexity, successfully passing all test cases.
• 2. The second question was related to 2D Arrays, requiring a sorting application. I tackled it efficiently with O(NlogN) time and O(N) space complexity.
• 3. The third question presented a medium-level Graph algorithm problem. I solved it in O(N) time and O(N) space complexity.
• 4. The fourth and most challenging question was a hard-level Bit Manipulation problem. It took me several attempts to solve it in the most optimized manner — O(N) time and O(1) space complexity.

I managed to complete all four questions, with all the test cases passed, 32 minutes before the remaining time. After submission, I received a confirmation email from HackerRank.

Result of Online Assessment

Five days after the assessment, I received the thrilling news that I had been shortlisted for interviews. Atlassian went above and beyond by providing valuable sessions and resources to familiarize us with their culture and organization through “Get to Know Atlassian.”

Interview Process

The interview process consisted of two rounds: the Coding Round and the M&V (Management & Values) Round.

Coding Round: I received the interview invitation five days in advance, accompanied by a helpful preparation guide. The interview lasted for an hour, commencing at 8:30 AM via Zoom. My interviewer was exceptionally friendly and did an excellent job of putting me at ease, considering it was my first-ever interview. We began with warm-up questions involving DSA problems before diving into a medium-level HashMap problem. I was asked to share my screen and choose my preferred IDE. Initially, I solved the problem in O(N) time and O(N) space complexity but managed to optimize it further to O(1) time and O(N) space complexity. I explained the code thoroughly, and the interviewer was satisfied. Subsequently, the interviewer introduced slight modifications to the problem, all of which I addressed optimally, starting with the brute force approach.

After the problem-solving segment, I had the opportunity to ask questions. The interviewer’s patience and friendliness created a positive atmosphere, and the interview concluded on a high note.

M&V Round: An hour later, I received an email scheduling the M&V Round, which also took place on the same day. The interviewer for this round was equally friendly, fostering a comfortable environment for discussion. This round delved into my projects, experiences, personal growth, values, and personality. I shared experiences that had positively transformed me, and the conversation flowed smoothly. As always, I seized the chance to ask questions, gaining valuable insights.

Final Result

Just four hours after the interview, I received an email from an Atlassian recruiter, delivering the most incredible news — I had been selected for the Software Engineer Intern Role at Atlassian. It was a deeply emotional moment, and my eyes welled up with tears of sheer happiness.

I had the privilege of interning at Atlassian during the summer of 2022, and after successfully completing my internship, I received a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO). Today, I am proud to be a part of Atlassian as a Software Engineer, living a dream I once cherished.
