Its capital was Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), which was conquered by the Ottomans in 1453, marking the end of the Byzantine Empire. The Ottoman Empire was known for its system of government, which was characterized by a centralized authority led by the sultan, who combined political and religious leadership.
