Syllabus and Study Materials
In July 2022, I started my preparation for the JAM Mathematics. I first went through the syllabus of the test in detail. It includes topics from Real Analysis, Linear Algebra, Group Theory, Ordinary Differential Equations and Integral Calculus. Since, I had already done courses in Group Theory and ODE in my second year of BSc, I started my prep with these topics and then moved to Real Analysis, Integral Calculus and at last Linear Algebra.
To get a better understanding of the concepts, one should always rely on the books and not just lectures and exam specific study materials. Hence, I followed the following books for my prep:
- Real Analysis: Introduction to Real Analysis by SK Mapa, Mathematical Analysis by Malik & Arora
- Group Theory: A course in Abstract Algebra by Khanna & Bhambri
- ODE: Ordinary & Partial Differential Equations by MD Raisinghania
- Integral Calculus: Mathematical Analysis by Malik & Arora
- Linear Algebra: A course in Abstract Algebra by Khanna & Bhambri
After studying the relevant concepts from these books in detail, I moved to problem practice. Since it’s the most important part of preparation for the IIT JAM exam. I also made my own notes for revision while studying.
IIT JAM Mathematics Exam Experience
In my second year of BSc Mathematics, I came to know about the IIT JAM exam, the Joint Admission test for Masters. It is conducted every year in february by some IIT for admission into the Master of Science and other post graduate programs in IITs, NITs, IISERs, IISc and some other institutes in India. I was a bit unsure about my future plans at that time and hence, didn’t start my preparation until third year.
