Most Sought-After Specialisations Across IITs
As per the All India Survey of Higher Education Report 2017-2018, the engineering programme is one of the top three subjects with the highest number of enrollments. The report says, “Engineering and Technology is the 3rd major stream where 40,19,000 candidates have applied. The share of male candidates registered in Engineering and Technology is 71.4%, whereas enrollment of female candidates is 28.6%.
This particular stream has 17 sub-streams, such as Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, etc. The best five sub-streams are Mechanical Engineering with 8,80,000 candidates, Computer Engineering with 8,30,000 candidates, Electronics Engineering with 6,50,000 candidates, Civil Engineering with 5,90,000 candidates and Electrical Engineering with 4,18,000 candidates enrolled”.
All the IITs provide B.Tech, M.Tech, Dual Degree as well as PhD courses in over 100 specialisations. Computer Science Engineering is one of the most sought-after specialisations among candidates wishing to pursue B.Tech. Each year, over 90% of students qualifying for JEE Advanced choose this engineering specialisation at the undergraduate level. The 2nd and 3rd in popularity are Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
