Capital of Kerla (Thiruvananthapuram): Traders have been visiting and doing business in Thiruvananthapuram since at least 1000 BCE. A port once known as Ophir (now Poovar) in Thiruvananthapuram is where it is believed King Solomon’s ships docked around 1036 BCE. The Ays ruled the city in its early years. After their downfall in the 10th century, the city fell under the control of the Venadians.
After inheriting Venad in the late 17th century, Marthanda Varma conquered the neighbouring lands of Attingal, Kollam, Kottayam, Kayamkulam, Changanassery, Meenachil, Kottarakara, Poonjar, and Ambalapuzha.
Since 1920, Thiruvananthapuram has been its municipality. On 30th October 1940, during Chitra Thirunal Bala Rama Varma’s administration (he entered office in 1931), the city became a corporation. From 1 July 1949 till 31 October 1956, Chitra Thirunal Bala Rama Varma, monarch of Travancore, served as Rajpramukh of the Travancore-Cochin Union. On November 1, 1956, Thiruvananthapuram became Kerala’s capital.
