IIIT Dharwad Campus Experience

I joined IIIT Dharwad in 2022. On my first few days in college, I felt very uneasy and weird as it was my first experience of living away from my hometown. But as time passed, I made many friends and started enjoying my college days. Currently, I am in my third year, pursuing a B.Tech. in the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence branch.

About College:

The college is expanded to about 70 acres with lush green areas where students can walk and relax after a busy day. The college has one boys’ hostel and one girls’ hostel with spacious rooms and mess. It has one academic building, a sports complex, a well-equipped gym, and one shop where you can get all the necessary items. The college has good sports facilities such as one volleyball court, basketball court, table tennis tables, badminton court, lawn tennis court, cricket ground, football ground, one practice net for cricket and many other sports facilities such as chess, carrom, short put and many others. The only thing which I think missing in this college is an ATM.

My Journey:

First Year

In my first year, I attended many club events and learned many new things from people who are experts in their respective fields. In my first year, I got familiar with many new things about my college and course and the subjects taught in my first year varied from technical to non-technical. I explored all paths to decide which path I have to choose to work on and make my career. Till the second semester, I made up my mind about which path I had to take and how to study to achieve my goals. The faculty here are very helpful and knowledgeable and are always ready to help. In my first year, I felt the course was not that difficult. After the first year, we didn’t get summer vacations which are approximately 2 months but unfortunately, our batch didn’t get as our classes started very late due to late examinations of IIT-JEE because of COVID-19.

Second Year

In my second year, I joined various clubs in which I was interested. Second, the courses were highly technical and one had to put effort into understanding the concepts. Many events took place in college in which I participated and many contests also took place where one can highlight skills and win rewards. Many cultural events also took place such as drama, dance, music etc. After the third and fourth semesters, we got our first summer break in which students had great opportunities to learn new things or better skills.

Fests and Hackathons:

In the month of August-September, our college organizes a fest named “HABBA”, in which many types of cultural and non-cultural events take place. It is a one-day fest for college students but currently, the college is planning to call students from outside to attend this fest.

Our college is going to organize its first Hackathon very soon in which all students from outside too are allowed to participate and win big rewards.

Placements:

Placements in our college take place in the fourth year and many companies visit to select students from various branches such as Computer Science, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and Electronics and Communication Engineering. This year, the placement percentage was around 80 to 85 per cent which was down from 95 per cent in the previous year due to the recession.

Overall the college has a good, competitive and friendly environment and many good faculties make this college an excellent place to study and gain skills.
