How Many Types of Environments Are There?

The environment can be divided into two main categories – natural environment and man-made environment. Let’s discuss it more.

How Many Types of Environments Are There?

The environment can be broadly divided into:

Natural Environment

The natural environment includes ecosystems that exist without human intervention, such as forests, oceans, deserts, mountains, and rivers. These ecosystems are important for maintaining biodiversity and providing natural resources, functioning through complex ecological interactions.

Human-Made Environment

The human-made environment comprises structures and spaces created by humans, including cities, streets, roads, and buildings. These areas are designed to support human activities. Human-made environments often change the natural landscape.

Environments can also be categorized based on their characteristics into three main types:

  • Terrestrial Environments: Land-based ecosystems such as forests, deserts, grasslands, and urban areas, each with unique ecological features.
  • Aquatic Environments: Water-based ecosystems including freshwater bodies like lakes and rivers, and marine ecosystems such as seas and oceans, supporting diverse aquatic life.
  • Aerial Environments: Referring to the atmosphere involving air and flying organisms, such as birds and insects.
