How Does Star Topology Affect Network Performance and Speed?

Answer: In star topology all the systems are connected with single switch or server hence, the performance of network depends on the performance of the central switch/server and the speed of the star topology is high as the system is directly connected with the central switch.

Star topology has a central switch through which all the other system are connected with wires, reducing the probability of collision hence, the performance of the network becomes higher as compared to other topologies. Since, the computers are directly connected to central switch/ server it reduces the latency and increases the speed of the network. The performance and speed of network in star topology depends on the central switch/server.

Conclusion

So in star topology the performance of central switch or server and the number of systems connected mainly affects the network performance and speed. If there are large number of computers connected in star topology then the performance of the network may increase because of large traffic in the central server or switch. Also, if the central switch fails the whole network fails in star topology which affects the network performance as well. Inversely, the star topology enhances the performance as no data collision occurs in it and the fault detection in this network topology is easy. The speed of the network in star topology is high because each system has its own connection with the central server.
