Visa Inc. History
The Bank of America (BofA) launched the BankAmericard, which is now known as Visa card, in 1958. In the beginning it was very difficult to implement the BankAmericard – many borrowers were late with payments and there was a vast amount of fraud with cards. However, the executives were fixing the problems of the card and it had become profitable by 1961.
Over the following years, BofA started letting other banks use the BankAmericard system. This created a network of banks supporting the card, first across the United States and then internationally. In the late 1960s, the banks in this network formed their own organization, National BankAmericard Inc. (NBI), to manage the card.
A similar international organization, IBANCO, was created for the banks using the card outside the US. In 1976, these organizations united all the different versions of the card under the new Visa name. The transition to the Visa brand was completed by 1979. Visa has since grown into one of the biggest payment networks worldwide. In 2022, Visa suspended its operations in Russia after the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
