BHU Admission Experience For BSc (Hons.)

I applied for the BSc (Hons.) program at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in 2020. At that time, there was no CUET and BHU conducted its own UET (Undergraduate Entrance Test) for admission to its UG courses. For the BSc (Hons.) program, there were separate papers for the Bio and Maths group. Since I am from a maths background, I’ll mainly focus on that. The test was 150 minutes comprising of 150 MCQs: 50 each from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The admission procedure for both groups are same though. After the results of the test were announced, the counselling procedure began.

About the Course:

The BSc (Hons.) program is offered at the Institute of Science ISc (for Boys & Girls) and Mahila Mahavidyalaya MMV (for Girls only). For the Maths group, there are 6 combinations to choose from SMK, PMK, PMS, PMC, PMG, PMGr where M represents Mathematics, P Physics, C Chemistry, S Statistics, K Computer Science, G Geology and Gr Geography. In any combination, we have to study all three subjects for the first two years of our course and just the Hons. subject for the third year.

Also, there’s a provision for PAID seats in BHU. The cutoff for these seats is less than that of the General cutoff for admission but one has to pay almost Rs 30,000 extra every year as fees for a PAID seat. The tuition fee for a regular seat is almost Rs 3,000 per annum.

Counselling and Seat Allotment:

Once the counselling portal is active, we have to upload the required documents such as the mark sheets, category, income and domicile certificate. After that, we have to list the combinations in the order of our preference. In every combination, we have three choices for the Hons. subject and hence, in total, we get 18-course combinations to list according to our preference. For the girl students, this number is twice 18, i.e. 36 since they also have the option to study at the MMV. Note that, after four semesters of your BSc, you have the option to choose your Hons subject different from the one allotted to you at the time of admission from one of your combination subjects. For example, if you got SMK with Maths Hons. at the time of admission but in two years get more interested in CS/Stats, and you can change your Hons. subject to CS/Stats.

Once the application process for counselling is over, the seat allotment process begins. The seat allotment is done in many phases until all the seats are filled. I remember that in 2020, there were as many as 12 lists released for the Maths group. Once you are allocated a course, you have 24 hours to make the online payment and secure the seat. After the payment, you may choose to Lock or Float your seat. If you choose the Float option, you might get an option to get a PAID seat of a combination of higher preference than the one allotted. If you don’t lock your seat, it’ll get automatically locked once the admission process is over.

Hostel Allotment:

There are a limited number of hostel seats for the students in the campus hostels. The Hostel Allotment is done usually after the admission process is over based on your hostel index. The hostel index is computed considering the UET score for 80% of its weightage and distance for 20% weightage.

Those who don’t get accommodation in the campus hostels can find rooms and PG nearby the campus at affordable rates near the Lanka, Hyderabad, Chhitupur or the Seer gate of the campus.

Once the admission process is over, you’ll get further instructions in your registered email to report to the beautiful BHU campus, which will become your second home for the rest of your life!
