Barclays Work Experience
I had the fortune to be a part of the [4 month and a 2 month as a full-time employee] of Barclays where I was a member of the software engineering unit.
I have always dreamed of working for a large organization such as Barclays bank. Therefore, I was very excited when I heard of the opportunity and immediately went for the position. This made me optimistic for the success ahead. While working here I developed many professional skills which I used on different projects, some of them attended with a number of challenges and learning chances.
Key Responsibilities:
- Had a significant impact on the creation and operation of the front-office section of our banking website as well as different banking features.
- Partnered closely with the development team so that the product delivery is maximized while the quality of the software solutions turns out to be the best.
- Being an active team player and contributing to code reviews, mentoring and guiding other team members on coding practices and suggesting new ideas to enhance code quality and maintainability.
- Partaking in continuous professional learning and skill improvement to stay updated with the new technologies and the most productive engineering practices in software.
Pros:
- The finance industry brought me, from the inside, great knowledge of financial services, customer requirements and needs.
- Training programs and mentorship channels are created to insure that employees get opportunities for developing their careers internally through them.
- As the nature of work was highlighted, a good work-life balance was offered, with flexible working hours and the possibility of working remotely.
- Such as use of the latest technologies where I learn to fully comprehend tools and resources that aim at boosting my technical skills and expertise.
Cons:
- Infrequently strict project deadlines managed to place a heavy load of pressure on the team, whereby time management and prioritization becomes vital.
- The management in the organization was at times problematic with regards to making decisions, this is because of the centralized structure which led to bureaucratic delays.
- Tightened integration of transversal groups, those functions usually being isolated.
I have got so much out of my Barclays internship through the pain and joy I have experienced. I was a part of influential projects and had the good fortune of working very hard together with many people that are gifted and talented expressly to one’s advantage on a personal and professional level.
