Asia: An Introduction
- Asia is by far the largest continent on earth, which of course means there’s likely to be more of everything. It also means that, in terms of facts and figures, you’re likely to get more out of Asia than any other landmass on earth.
- Asia has the highest and lowest points on the earth’s surface, the longest coastline, the widest weather extremes in the world, and the most diverse forms of plant and animal life on earth. As the largest and most populous continent, Asia is home to the largest (Russia) and most populous (China) nations.
- Asia is part of the supercontinent known as Eurasia, and the Asian and European continents are not technically separate.
- Asia has more billionaires than anywhere else in the world. However, a large number of its residents live in poverty, many of them living on less than US$1 a day. Only China has more billionaires than the US, which continues to lag behind emerging Asian economies.
- Asia is home to 14 of the world’s highest mountains, all with peaks over 8,000 meters above sea level. The highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest in Nepal rises to 8,848 meters above sea level.
- Asia is a land of one of the three longest rivers in the world. Even if it lags behind the Nile in Egypt and the Amazon in South America, the Yangtze is still a thoroughly amazing sail. This Chinese waterway is said to be almost thousands of kilometres long!
